Reflexology is a form of complementary therapy and uses hand massage to reflex areas in both feet and hands.
It is a natural holistic therapy and was first known and practiced by, amongst others, the Chinese and Egyptian cultures.
Introduced to the West in 1913 by Dr. William Fitzgerald, an ear, nose and throat surgeon, Reflexology was initially called ‘Zone Therapy’, as it was found that pressure on one part of a area of the body could affect everything else in that same zone. In the 1930’s, Reflexology was further refined by Eunice Ingham and introduced into the United Kingdom in the 1960’s by the late Doreen Bayly.
Reflexology is based on the principle that the organs, muscles and glands in the body have a reflex area in both feet and hands. As the whole body is represented in the feet, the therapy allows the body to be treated as a whole.
The body has a natural ability to heal itself. However, following illness, stress or injury, etc. it is said to be in a state of ‘imbalance’ and vital energy systems are blocked. By working on these specific reflexes, the gentle massage can often help the body to return to a state of homeostasis (balance), often with very positive results.
